The winter market is going to be very difficult for clubs to improve their teams, with others often unwilling to weaken their own squads halfway through a campaign, yet with the cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic still looming over the financial side of the football, there are a number of players who could shake up the January market.

Players have been more willing to allow their contracts to drift towards expiration in recent years, not least because the pandemic has seen clubs have less money to spend on transfer fees.
We’ve seen Kylian Mbappe become the highest profile example of this with his deal set to run out in June 2022, yet there are players who are less impactful than the Frenchman who are trying to do the same, yet their selling club would lose out massively in not receiving a fee.

Mino Raiola to Rai about Pogba-Juventus rumours: “December is the month of dreams… and I can’t stop dreams, but is better to not speak about Paul. If some former Man United players don’t speak about me and Paul, they won’t work anymore”. 🔴 #MUFC

In January of 2022, we’re likely to see a number of high-profile players move, but the crucial aspect of almost all of these situations is that it is in the selling club’s interest to move the player on.

Here are five of the biggest names who could shape the mid-season market:
Raheem Sterling to FC Barcelona:
Sterling was one of the stars of the European Championships in the summer, but Pep Guardiola has seemingly lost all faith with him domestically. The England forward doesn’t want to risk missing the 2022 World Cup as he knows youngsters Rashford, Foden, Sancho and Grealish might seize the opportunity to replace him.
He recognizes he needs minutes away from Manchester City. He has been linked with a Barcelona loan considering their financial issues currently, but City are hoping to find a permanent buyer.

Isco to AC Milan/Sevilla:
This is a departure that has seemed years in the making. Numerous coaches have had their issues with Isco and fitting him into the starting XI. Having not played since September 25th, the Spaniard is aware that his contract is due to expire in the summer of 2022.
Once upon a time Isco was always a first choice in the Centre Attacking Midfield (CAM) role but now it may be time for him to get back his magic at some other club.
Los Blancos will try to sell him in January, with AC Milan and Sevilla having been interested in the past, but the midfielder has to show he is still the same player.

Donny Van de Beek to Real Madrid/ Wolves:
The Dutchman (VDB) who arrived at Old Trafford in September 2020 following his departure from Ajax has been involved in just 41 games for the club in all competitions. In the Premier League Donny has been given a total of 17 minutes in 2 appearances, in the EFL Cup a total of 90 minutes after getting knocked out by West Ham and 49 minutes in the Champions League.
Donny van de Beek has never been offered to Real Madrid. There are many clubs interested but no talk, proposal or negotiation with Real Madrid as things stand 🔴 #MUFC

Real Madrid could be the favourites to sign Donny as they will look to strengthen their midfield with Kroos and Modric both at their prime age while Ceballos and Valverde are out injured leaving only Casemiro, Isco and Camavinga fit to play.

Paul Pogba to Real Madrid/Juventus/PSG:
The French midfielder is unlikely to sign a contract extension with Manchester United. Manchester United are unlikely to offer the contract extension he wants. This leads to a situation where United want to get some money for the player in January.
Pogba had stated earlier in the season that he desire’s to play for Real Madrid and now may be perfect time for him to get his dream move. While Juventus have also appreciated Pogba a lot since his departure from the club and Allegri would be more than happy to welcome him back. It all depends on his agent Mino Raiola to strike a good deal for all the parties involved in order to let Paul Pogba get the move.
Mino Raiola is eyeing another free transfer for his client in the summer, but if there are suitable cash offers in January, United would likely accept.

Edinson Cavani to FC Barcelona:
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s arrival has complicated life in Manchester for Edinson Cavani, with the role he filled last season now taken by the Portuguese star. He has barely played this term, getting just 274 minutes in total, although this is in part due to his international obligations with Uruguay.
There are top clubs that are interested in him and his ability, including Barcelona, who will look to replace Sergio Aguero following his health concerns. The Uruguayan’s contract at Old Trafford expires in June and it wouldn’t be difficult for him to escape early, although United would want to avoid him staying in the Premier League.
