Liverpool took an early 2-0 lead against Real Madrid during their round of 16 first leg. First Nunez and then Salah scored twice for Liverpool within 15 minutes into the game. However, things started going south for them after the 20 minutes mark as both Vinicius Jr. and Karim Benzema scored a brace each with Militao piling on as they finished the match with a 2-5 scoreline at the end of the 90 minutes.
Liverpool since then has had a roller coaster of performances. They won 7-0 against Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Premier League who are having a fabulous season. Ahead of their clash, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has said, “As difficult as it is, that’s probably possible. Not likely but possible. We respect the competition too much, we respect the opposition too much to not look forward to this game.”

Jurgen Klopp 🗣 “What I said after the game on the night was Madrid, with the result, they are through to the next round,”
“But now we are three weeks later and we know there is a game to play. If there is only one per cent chance I would like to give it a try. #LFC #KLOPP 🔴 pic.twitter.com/93kCs3DXYk

After their win against Manchester United, they went on to lose 1-0 against relegation-facing 18th-placed Bournemouth just before their Champions League clash. Hence, at this moment, it’s anyone’s guess if they can pull off the miracle against Real Madrid or not. About their chances, Klopp said, “If we can surprise ourselves in a negative way, we should be able to surprise ourselves in a positive way too.”
He added, “We are not here and telling Madrid ‘be careful we are coming’. We’re here to try to win the game. We have to play extremely good. If we play a normal game or a good game, it won’t be enough. I think in this room, 100 per cent of the people in this room think we have no chance. We are the complete outsiders. It’s the situation, it’s football and we try to give it a go.”

There have only been four teams who have made a comeback in the Champions League after losing with a deficit of 3 or more goals. However, Liverpool is one of them and they pulled this off only a few years ago as they defeated Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield after they lost to them 3-0 at Camp Nou in the Champions League semi-finals first leg in 2019.
Barcelona is also one of the teams who lost 4-0 to PSG in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. Then they pulled off a miracle by winning 6-1 at Camp Nou in the second leg.
Liverpool will have a tougher job pulling it off as they will be traveling to Real Madrid’s home ground for this match. However, Klopp is staying positive as he mimicked Neymar’s unforgettable words before their miracle match saying, “If there is only one per cent chance I would like to give it a try, we are here to play an extremely strong opponent and try to win the game.”
