Chelsea now appear to be lining up in a 3-5-2 formation rather than the 3-4-3 that Graham Potter employed in his final games in command following Bruno’s hiring as temporary manager. Wesley Fofana, who is well enough to start in the back three, has been replaced by Reece James at right wingback, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been dropped to the bench by the Spanish.

As he accelerates his recovery from a major hamstring injury, N’Golo Kante is also given his first start since August, replacing Mykhailo Mudryk in the starting lineup. That leaves Chelsea with a front two of Joao Felix and Kai Havertz as they try to win again at Stamford Bridge.

Six changes have been made by Jurgen Klopp from the Liverpool team that lost 4-1 to Manchester City on Saturday, and some key players have been lost. When the manager dismantles the defence that for so long supported Liverpool’s success, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Andy Robertson are all left off the starting lineup.

In addition to Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, and Kostas Tsimikas joining the squad, Harvey Elliott is replaced in midfield by Curtis Jones. Other changes to the attack include the removal of former Chelsea forwards Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah in favour of Roberto Firmino and Darwin Nunez, who have been reinstated to the starting lineup.

Chelsea, coached by interim manager Bruno Saltor, was the superior, more dangerous squad, but, as was the case so often throughout Potter’s disastrous tenure, they missed out on several great chances to score. Liverpool managed to avoid losing four straight games overall, but they didn’t show much sign of being prepared to challenge for the top four late in the season.

The two struggling Premier League heavyweights drew for the fourth time in a row at 0-0, leaving Liverpool in eighth place with 10 games left and seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. Chelsea, who fired Potter after a 2-0 loss to Aston Villa at home on Saturday, is still in the bottom half of the standings in 11th place.

Chelsea made a substitution on the substitutes’ bench, but Jurgen Klopp made six alterations to the team that lost 4-1 at Manchester City. As Virgil van Dijk was out due to illness, Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson all started on the bench.

In the meantime, Saltor changed two things from Potter’s previous starting lineup, including giving N’Golo Kante his first start since August. And the World Cup winner demonstrated why Kante’s availability for only 33 minutes during Potter’s seven months in command will have frustrated him so much.

Kante performed his usual all-action first half, showing he was equally adept at stopping Liverpool attacks as he was at starting them for his own team. Yet, despite controlling a large portion of the opening 45 minutes, Chelsea’s inability to convert chances proved to be their downfall.

After only four minutes, the vivacious Joao Felix made a goal-bound run, but he let Joel Matip close the gap and make an essential save. Just one minute later, Mateo Kovacic had rounded Alisson when Liverpool’s other center-back, Ibrahima Konate, produced a crucial save of his own by clearing the ball off the line.

When the Liverpool goalkeeper came out to block in front of Kai Havertz on the edge of the six-yard box, it was time to frustrate the home team. Midway through the first half, Chelsea did have the ball in the Liverpool goal, but Reece James’ thunderous volley after a corner was disallowed for offside against Enzo Fernandez after the initial flick-on.

The second part of the narrative was much of the same. When he was put clear through, Kovacic missed another excellent opportunity for Chelsea by shooting high over the bar. The ruling was unarguable, but the hosts then had another goal disallowed.

Kante slipped Havertz in behind the Liverpool defence, and Havertz fired straight at Alisson. Although the ball rebounded to the Chelsea striker and into the goal, it didn’t take long for the video assistant referee to declare that the ball had entered off Havertz’s arm. When Salah and Robertson were added, Klopp quickly looked to his bench for a spark, but neither they nor Chelsea had the calibre or finesse necessary to secure all three points.
