UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin appeared on Gary Neville’s YouTube channel ‘Overlap’. There he spoke about changing the rule ahead of Manchester United almost receiving final bids from owners with ties to other clubs. He has said, “We are not thinking about Manchester United only. We’ve had five or six owners of clubs who want to buy another club. We have to see what to do.”

According to the current rules of UEFA, if two clubs are owned by a single owner, they will not be able to play in the same European competition. However, as times are changing and the same club owners are moving on to buy other clubs, UEFA is thinking of changing this rule. The main issue regarding the conflict of interest will still remain. That’s why Aleksander Ceferin has said that there will be strict regulations even if they do change this rule.

He said, The options are that it stays like that or that we allow them to play in the same competition. I’m not sure yet. We have to speak about these regulations and see what to do about it.” He added, “There is more and more interest in this multi-club ownership. We shouldn’t just say no for the investments for multi-club ownership, but we have to see what kind of rules we set in that case, because the rules have to be strict.”

Aleksander Ceferin spoke about the issue that will remain if the rule changes, From one point of view it’s true if you are the owner of two clubs and they play in the same competition you can say to one club to lose because you want the other to win. But for you, as a football player, do you think it’s so easy to do that, to tell a coach, lose the match because the other wants to win?”

The Glazer family, the current owners of Manchester United have put the selling price at £6 billion. Their two top bidders are the English businessman, Jim Ratcliffe who also owns the French club Nice, and Qatari minister Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, who has ties with the French giant, PSG. The deadline for the Manchester United sale closing has already been delayed till the end of June from April. The current UEFA law is a matter of concern for both bidders, but if it changes, it will definitely be a boost for the sale.
