Gianni Infantino also stood and won the last FIFA election unopposed last time 4 years ago. He was voted for Presidency by the votes of delegates from 211 federations that are members of FIFA. This year, during the FIFA council meeting in Rwanda, the voting happened where there was no opposing voice against Infantino.

Even though he has not been everyone’s favorite this whole time as many issues arose from his proposals multiple times. He proposed to move the World Cup once every 2 years. He also supported and defended when many rose their voices against Qatar’s treatment of migrant workers and women as the 2022 World Cup was scheduled there. The controversy furthered as Qatar’s harsh treatment towards the LGBTQ community was conspicuous.

However, the 2022 Qatar World Cup was still a success judging by several parameters. After being re-elected, Gianni Infantino said, “It is an incredible honor and privilege, and a great responsibility. I promise to continue serving FIFA and football around the world.” He added, “To those that love me, and I know there are many, and those who hate me, I know there are a few, I love you all.”

FIFA guidelines say that the maximum tenure of a FIFA President is 3 terms of 4 years. This means that the first term of Infantino back in 2016 after Sepp Blatter was banned was only for years. This stipulates that this term won’t be Infantino’s last. He will be able to serve another term if he is re-elected after 2027 and will stay as the FIFA president till 2031.

He has set to expand both Men’s and Women’s World Cups, increase FIFA’s revenue, and make the player transfers more transparent. FIFA’s revenues have already increased to $7.5 billion and he plans to increase that to a record $11 billion in the next 4 years. The Women’s World Cup this year in New Zealand and Australia will include 32 teams for the first time. The 2026 Men’s World Cup will include 48 teams for thr first time as well.

About bringing more transparency to players’ transfers, Infantino said, “We must improve our regulations and the FIFA statuses. We will continue to evolve our good governance principles and look at the transfer system, and maybe have a discussion to improve transparency of transfer fees and salaries.”
