After breaking the previous record for most Premier League goals in a season, Erling Haaland gave a statement in the locker room to congratulate his teammates. During their 3-0 victory over West Ham, the Norwegian superstar scored his 35th goal in just 31 Premier League games.

With his chip, Haaland broke the previous mark of 34 that was previously held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer during the 1993–1994 and 1994–1995 seasons, respectively. The 22-year-old was given a guard of honor by his teammates as he left the field; later, as his friends struck him on the back, he described the experience as “really painful.”

Once back in the dressing room, Haaland thanked his team-mates in a brief speech. He said, ‘I don’t know what more to say but I’m really happy and thank you guys so much.’ Haaland then smiled cheekily as he was applauded by his Man City pals.

Haaland’s thoughts after the game

Talking about his record-breaking goal, Haaland said, ‘[It’s a] Special night and a special moment. I’m really happy and proud. Of course I knew about it but we tried to create the chances to score goals, they came here to try and defend for 90 minutes. It was an important win. You see what my first thought is, to run towards the goal.’

Talking about the Guard of Honour, Haaland admitted that it was quite painful. He said, ‘It was really painful this guard of honour, everyone hit me in the back, but it was really nice. I’m really happy.’

When asked if he could break Dixie Dean’s all-time record of goals for a top-flight club – 63 in the 1927-28 season, he said, We cannot keep thinking about these records, I will become crazy in my head. I will go home now and play some video games and tomorrow we will think about Leeds.’

Even Pep Guardiola didn’t hold back on hyping up his striker after he broke a legendary record. Pep said, ‘He is a joy. Everyone is happy to have him with us. This record will be broken sooner or later, maybe by him in the future, because he will score a lot of goals. But Andy Cole and Alan Shearer are incredible strikers and I think he deserved it.’

Now, Manchester City will be eyeing the treble. They are in pole position to win the Premier League after Arsenal let a huge lead slip. In the Champions League, they will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals and will be aiming to take revenge for last season. In the FA Cup, they will face Manchester United in the finals on the 3rd of June.
