The India vs Pakistan match is three months away, and travel costs to the host city are surging. Flight prices significantly increased on the day of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This is after hotel prices have risen exponentially leading up to the World Cup 2023.
Flight prices have risen notably between the Delhi-Ahmedabad and Mumbai-Ahmedabad sectors. Currently, direct one-way travel from Delhi or Mumbai to Ahmedabad costs between 15,000 and 22,000 rupees.
“Ever since the announcement has been made officially, there has been a 5X increase in hotel tariffs for one night. Luxury hotels have been charging as high as ₹50,000 per night. And it’s not just hotels but even flight tickets are soaring,” said Nishant Pitti, CEO and Co-Founder of EaseMyTrip in Hindustan Times.

“Even if people book three months in advance, airfares are six times more expensive than usual. An economy class Delhi-Ahmedabad ticket in August and September would be around ₹3000. But the same ticket a day before the match, would cost ₹20,000,” he added.
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamshala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune are the 10 cities where the competition will take conducted. Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati will host warm-up matches between September 28 to October 3. A high number of bookings have already taken place. Many are expected to be sold out during the World Cup 2023.
“We have seen a significant surge in search queries for travel to all host cities. A one-way average flight fare for Delhi- Ahmedabad last year was ₹4973. This year it is as high as ₹12,000 for Indigo flights and ₹22,000 for Vistara flights. That’s more than a 100% increase. Price fares may go up close to the match dates depending upon the demand and availability,” said Aloke Bajpai, Group CEO and Co-Founder of ixigo told Hindustan Times.
While the hotels are experiencing increased demand, there is still silence on the matter of World Cup 2023 tickets. State associations have begun releasing ticket prices for the event, but no information on purchases is available.
The BCCI and ICC are expected to release the information sometime in July. The schedule was announced on June 27 and two weeks later there still remains uncertainty.
