In an exclusive interview, the English Foreign Secretary said: “These are Muslim countries, they have very different cultural starting point for us. I think it’s important when you’re a visitor to a country that you respect the culture of your host nation.”

However, within hours of this statement, the UM Prime Minister’s official spokesman said LGBT fans should not be expected to “compromise who they are” if they visit Qatar for the World Cup. While a number of ministers from England and Wales have decided to boycott the World Cup, Mr. Cleverley is planning to attend matches claiming that the UK has incredibly important partners in the middle-east.

Cleverley’s statement comes after an English LGBT activist was apprehended by Qatari police for staging an LGBT rights protest in Doha. The British activist named Peter Tatchell, who had staged a similar protest ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, stood for more than hour wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “#Qatarantigay” and holding a placard that read “Qatar arrests and subjects LGBTs to conversion”. Tatchell was stopped by two uniformed police officers and three plain clothes officials in front of the national museum of Qatar.
