Gulf countries are big consumers of water even though the region itself is devoid of natural rain. Still, their consumption of water will go off the roofs since the Qatari grounds will need an enormous amount of fresh water to be playable during the upcoming world cup.

The only solution to this problem is desalination or the process of converting seawater into fresh water. However, there are drawbacks to this method. The huge amount of desalination would need an even bigger amount of fossil fuel energy. Which is a limited resource. This is a big concern to environmentalists. Apart from that, the marine environment will be in huge jeopardy with this enormous amount of desalination.

The distribution of freshwater too is running scarce in Qatar. During the Lusail Super Cup in September this year, the venue ran out of fresh drinkable water just in the first half. This was the most crowded match in any Qatari stadium. The number of people attending this match was 77000. The numbers are only expected to increase during World Cup.

The protests due to the exploitation of human labor were already at an all-time high in terms of World Cup maintenance. The Water crisis is adding fuel to the environmental cost of this world cup.
