FIFA World Cup Knockouts – Asian Teams Regin in FIFA WC: South Korea sealed their place in the Round of 16 by the barest of margins in a tight finish to group H on Friday. This marks just the second time they have made it past the group stage, containing the rising strength of Asia in the WC.  For the first time in history, three Asian teams have made it to the knockouts, with former World Champions, European Champions and South American champions all going down in Qatar. FIFA World Cup Knockouts: True Asian AGE! Australia, Japan & South Korea write HISTORY as 3 Asian Teams qualify for knockouts for first time, topple former World Cup & Euro champions – Check out

In a competition usually dominated by South American and European teams, it is Asia that has turned up the heat in Qatar. Six teams from AFC this World Cup, and three made it past the group stage. In more than 90 years since the first World Cup, it marks the first time more than two Asian teams have made it to the Round 16.

The crowning moment will be for Japan who topped their group. Japan defeated 2014 champions Germany and followed it up with a win over 2010 champions Spain.  It is their best performance at a World Cup, winning them plaudits from all around the globe.

Meanwhile, Australia were the first team to qualify for the knockouts from the AFC. The Socceroos lost to France in their opener but bounced back with wins over Tunisia and Denmark to make it to the Round of 16. It is the second time they have made it past the group stage, with the last instance being back in 2006.

On Friday, South Korea edged out Uruguay in the next round. Heung-Min Son and Co defeated 2016 European Champions Portugal to seal their knockout berth. It is also their second instance of reaching Round 2 after they made the semifinals back in 2002. Meanwhile, they had earlier settled for a draw with the same opponent.

While three Asian sides have progressed, it has been a productive world Cup for the AFC contingent. Saudi Arabia defeated Lionel Messi’s Argentina in one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history. Meanwhile, Iran missed out on qualification in their last game. They nonetheless defeated a Gareth Bales’ led Wales outfit on their way out. Hosts Qatar were the only winless Asian side at the tournament.
