Hansi Flick’s team knew that anything less than a win would send them to the last 16, but Japan’s victory in the other game meant they faced the daunting task of catching up to Spain by seven goals. Serge Gnabry put them ahead at halftime, but goals from Yeltsin Tejeda and Juan Pablo Vargas momentarily put Costa Rica in the running for qualification.

However, Luis Fernando Suarez’s team couldn’t hold on, and a Germany side who hit the post several times eventually completed their comeback. Flick’s men regained control after a Kai Havertz double, before Niclas Fullkrug scored his second goal to make it 4-2.

While all of this was going on, the other group game between Japan and Spain had its own set of unexpected events. Alvaro Morata had put Luis Enrique’s side ahead before halftime, but they were also stung by a quickfire double. Japan scored with Ritsu Doan and Ao Tanaka, resulting in a frenzied finish to the game. Tanaka’s effort was contentious, with Spain believing the ball had gone out of play during the build-up.

Spain was on their way out of the tournament during the brief period when Costa Rica lead. Instead, they went into extra time knowing they had a goal differential edge over Germany that would carry them through.

Germany has failed to get past the first round for the second time in a row. The 2014 winners were defeated twice in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, with Mexico and South Korea scoring victory to send them home.

However, the damage was done before the last game this time. Germany wasted chances in a 2-1 loss to Japan, and their draw with Spain meant they went into their final game knowing their destiny was dependent on the outcome of other games.
