Speaking to talkSPORT, former England striker Darren Bent suggested that Gerrard could be an ideal candidate for the role of England manager after Southgate. He said:
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he was one of the candidates for the England job next. I’m not saying that he should get it, but you know what the FA are like. They like people who have been in the system before.”
“He’s obviously played for England and he’s very much a company man, isn’t he? It wouldn’t surprise me. I just think that he could be one, certainly.” he added.

The Three Lions were most recently dropped to the UEFA Nations League’s lower division. Southgate received a new contract to the end of 2024 as compensation for guiding England to the Euro 2020 final. Additionally, he led England to the 2018 World Cup semifinals. The Three Lions were kicked out of the top division of the Nations League due to poor performance over the previous 12 months.

The Three Lions, who are now ranked fifth in the world, were placed in Group B with the United States, Wales, and Iran. The quadrennial competition is scheduled to begin on November 20 and conclude on December 18.
