He stated that the allocation details must be examined and agreed upon, but that it will proceed, making it similar to an international World Cup of 32 teams. FIFA wants to hold an expanded Club World Cup every four years instead of the current yearly event, which draws little attention outside of South America. FIFA had hoped to conclude the agreement at a meeting of the European Teams Association, which represents the interests of the 220 major European clubs, last Friday in Doha, but Infantino withdrew at the last minute when it became evident that his concept would not be approved.

But speaking in a press conference before the World Cup final on Sunday, Infantino said: ‘The new men’s Club World Cup will therefore take place in 2205 and feature 32 teams, the best teams in the world.’ The 2022 Club World Cup will be staged in Morocco in February of next year, with teams including Real Madrid, the European champions.

Infantino also confirmed that a women’s Club World Cup will be held in 2025, however, specifics have yet to be revealed. Over the last two weeks, negotiations have taken place in Qatar, but the clubs have refused to ratify the plans.

Infantino announced the development of a ‘FIFA World Series’ concept, which will include friendly tournaments against four teams from different continents during the March international window in even years. The FIFA president, who unveiled a number of council decisions, said that the hosts for the Men’s World Cup in 2030 would be determined in 2024, while the hosts for the Women’s World Cup in 2031 will be decided in 2025. Infantino confirmed that he may be FIFA president until 2031, adding that he is capable of serving three terms.
