F1 Russian GP: Russian Grand Prix’s contract terminated: After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, Formula 1 has announced that it would not race in Russia this year. The Russian Grand Prix was supposed to happen on 25th September this year. Follow Formula 1 Live Updates on InsideSport.IN.

The statement reads, “Formula 1 can confirm it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter meaning Russia will not have a race in the future.”

The promoter of the Russian Grand Prix, Rosgonki claimed that it was still possible that the race could go ahead. But now F1 has revealed that the contract has been terminated.

It means there will be no shift from Sochi to St Petersburg in 2023. F1 was set to race at the revamped Igora Drive circuit from next year. The contract for the Russian Grand Prix was till 2025.

The decision to terminate the contract is understood to have been taken last week. It was part of the talks between F1 officials and team bosses about the race following the invasion of Ukraine.

Sports around the world have been cutting ties with Russia since they invaded Ukraine. Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be permitted to take part in this month’s Paralympic Games in Beijing. Meanwhile, FIFA has also suspended the Russian national football team and all Russian clubs.

The FIA World Motor Sport Council held an extraordinary meeting earlier this week to discuss issues relating to Russia’s invasion. It announced that Russian and Belarusian drivers would still be able to race, but only under the neutral FIA flag.

But the Motorsport UK has announced Russian and Belarusian drivers would not be permitted to race in the UK. There are reports which suggest that this could happen in Australia also. The Russian and Belarusian drivers would not be permitted to race in Australia also.

Haas’ driver, Nikita Mazepin’s future is also uncertain. The team’s sponsor, Uralkali has been removed from Haas’ car on the final day of the pre-season testing.
