Trident Gaming to bring collegiate events for talented athletes

In an exclusive interview with Insidesport, Ghatak and Fea (Founders of Trident Gaming) shared insights about upcoming IPs.

Trident Gaming recently launched Trident Esports Scrims for the grassroots-level players of Battlegrounds Mobile India. During an interview with Insidesport, Ghatak and Fea talked about the grassroots events, government support, invite criteria, and more.

How does Trident Gaming give the solution for the lack of grassroots events?

Ghatak: When we founded Trident Gaming, our goal has been to create for the community. One thing the community has constantly told us is that they don’t have a platform to showcase their skills. That is why we are launching the Trident Esports Scrims, which will have a long-term format and run throughout the year.

Additionally, this scrim series won’t have a format where a team has to prove themselves in just one match. Teams will compete across multiple matches from the first stage itself, showcasing their skills and not being a victim to bad luck.

This is just the beginning in our efforts for the grassroots-level community. We are also bringing other IPs including collegiate events for talented athletes to have a platform to prove themselves.

In some events, teams get invited to the Grand finals and semifinals based on past achievements. What should be the ideal criteria for an invite to a major tournament?

Ghatak: For the ideal criteria for inviting teams to major tournaments, a combination of factors should be considered. These may include recent performance, team balance, and a wildcard option for promising newcomers. This ensures a diverse and competitive field while giving opportunities to raw talent.

Of course, with that being said, at the end of the day, esports is still a business. Inviting teams which bring viewership to show brands is a focus for TOs. That’s where Trident comes in as we will host grassroots-level tournaments. We hone promising talent to become a star, automatically attracting the attention of the community.

How can government policies and initiatives better support the development of esports infrastructure in India?

Fea: In my opinion, the government can better support esports in India by recognizing it as a legitimate sport and providing necessary funding, resources and infrastructure. This can include setting up dedicated esports centers, and incorporating esports in the national sports policy. Introducing esports as a co-curricular activity in schools and colleges  can also be a major step towards the development of esports.

How do traditional societal views and stereotypes regarding gaming affect the perception and acceptance of esports in India?

Fea: Traditional societal views and stereotypes regarding gaming can be challenged by raising awareness about the benefits of esports, such as skill development, teamwork, and problem-solving. This can be done through educational programs, community events, and media campaigns that showcase the positive aspects of gaming and esports. Support of families plays a major role in accepting esports as a career.

How can the revenue generation model for esports events and organizations be improved in India?

Fea: There are many different answers and opinions on this topic [laughs]. I will answer this from the current scenario in India. Firstly, we need to reduce the negative stereotypes around gaming in the country by pushing positive storylines to bring more non-endemic brands into esports. Brand sponsorships continue to be the major source of revenue for everyone in the industry and I think there is still scope for improvement in that area. TOs and publishers must properly focus on conversion from the huge number of eyeballs.

How does the pressure and stress of competing in successive LAN events affect players’ physical and mental well-being?

Ghatak: Competing in successive LAN events can have a significant impact on players’ physical and mental well-being. This is not only due to fatigue or burnout but also because of a disruption in their work-life balance. During a LAN event, players are usually busy the whole day with a hectic schedule, practices, reviewing past days performance, and more. This is not just physically taxing but has a negative psychological effect as well if it’s done for too long.

Organizations should prioritize the player’s health by providing proper rest, mental health support, and ample physical exercises. This can include hiring sports psychologists, physiotherapists, and nutritionists to ensure players are well-prepared for the challenges they face during tournaments.
