In one of Pokimane’s recent live streams on Twitch, she talked about this issue in detail. While going through unban appeals, a user who frequently called others ‘simps’ caught her attention. She went on to explain that a word might seem harmless but it is of greater magnitude when used in a demeaning manner. She made the argument that while anyone can theoretically “simp” for anyone else, online society has demonised the idea of being kind to or standing up for someone who is of the opposite sex.

Pokimane calls out ‘simp hate’

The Moroccan-Canadian streamer discussed how the negative associations with the term “simps” have affected her. “I can tell you throughout my entire career as a female streamer, I have sensed on numerous occasions my male counterparts, my male friends being afraid to stand up for me because they will be labelled simps. How else can you describe that without some weird internalized misogyny? Like, that’s sad. That’s f*cking sad,” she said.

Actually, ‘Simp’ is a slang term for males who are perceived as being too subservient and attentive to women. According to Pokimane, troublemakers on the Internet use this word to harass others, which further leads to men becoming uncomfortable even with the thought of helping other women. She questioned, “Isn’t it weird young boys are being told ‘simping’ is so terrible? ‘If you’re doting on a woman, it’s so terrible.’ But it’s not.” “If your parents are together, your dad probably simps for your mom. And so what? That’s a normal part of loving other human beings,” she added.

Twitch’s take on ‘simp hunting’

Twitch actually banned the usage of the word “simp” in an offensive or degrading manner back in 2020, and this prohibition extends to emotes as well. The streaming platform may take action if the phrase is used in a harassing way. The user whom Pokimane stumbled across was banned for “simp hunting” in the chats as it went against Twitch’s regulatory guidelines.
