Valve Software, the minds behind Steam, the popular gaming platform, is introducing a new feature called Steam Families. This aims to simplify game sharing within households and offer more robust parental controls. Check out the detailed information below:
Steam Families: Sharing Made Easy
Steam Families, currently in beta testing, allows groups of up to six Steam accounts to be linked. This grants access to a combined game library. Imagine your family – anyone in the group can install and play games another member owns, even if they’re online at the same time. However, playing the same game simultaneously still requires separate purchases.
It introduces enhanced parental controls. Adults in the family can manage invitations, set playtime limits, restrict purchases, and even control access to the Steam storefront for Child accounts. Children can conveniently request new games through the app, simplifying communication with parents.

This feature reflects Valve’s relaxed stance on account sharing within Steam. Unlike some subscription services that crack down on password sharing, Steam allows for some flexibility. With Steam Families, Valve caters to gaming households and acknowledges the reality of account sharing. By combining game sharing and parental controls, they aim to create a more user-friendly experience for families who game together on Steam.
