Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of the Esports World Cup on Monday, October 23, 2023. The tournament will be held annually in Riyadh, starting in the summer of 2024. The Esports World Cup will feature tournaments in several leading esports titles, including Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, and Fortnite. The event will also include a variety of other activities, such as fan festivals, meet-and-greets with professional gamers, and workshops on game development.

The Esports World Cup is expected to be one of the largest and most prestigious esports tournaments in the world. The event will have a prize pool of $200 million, making it one of the most lucrative esports tournaments ever held.

The announcement of the Esports World Cup has been met with mixed reactions from the esports community. Some people are excited about the prospect of a major esports tournament being held in Saudi Arabia, while others are concerned about the country’s human rights record.

Saudi Arabia has been criticized for its human rights record, including its treatment of women, LGBTQ+ people, and migrant workers. Some people have called for a boycott of the Esports World Cup in protest of these human rights abuses.

Others argue that boycotting the World Cup would be unfair to the Saudi Arabian esports community, which is made up of many people who are not responsible for the country’s human rights record. They argue that the World Cup could be an opportunity to promote positive change in Saudi Arabia.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to participate in the World Cup is a personal one. There are valid arguments on both sides of the issue, and each individual must decide what they believe is the right thing to do.

In his statement Prince said, ” The Esports World Cup is the natural next step in Saudi Arabia’s journey to become the premier global hub for gaming and esports, offering an unmatched esports experience that pushes the boundaries of the industry. The competition will enhance our progress towards realizing the Vision 2030 objective of diversifying the economy, growing the tourism sector, creating new jobs in various industries, and providing world-class entertainment for citizens, residents, and visitors alike ”
