Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has finally given assent to a long-pending bill seeking to ban online gambling including online rummy and poker with stakes in the state. Tamil Nadu government initially passed the bill in October 2022. However, the bill was returned by the Governor. The Tamil Nadu government re-adopted the bill later in the assembly, once again sending it for Governor’s assent. Finally, as mentioned earlier, the Governor of the state, RN Ravi has given assent to the bill, banning online gambling in the state. Here’s all you need to know about the same.
According to popular news media agency, ANI, Tamil Nadu assembly passed the Bill in October 2022. However, the Governor of the state returned the bill in March 2023. A senior official of the Raj Bhavan had then mentioned that the bill was returned as the state legislature had no ‘legislative competence’ to frame the bill.

The Governor finally gave assent after the state government re-adopted the bill on March 23, 2023. After getting the assent, TN Chief Minister, Stalin mentioned,” The gazette notification will be issued today (Monday).”
In the Assembly, CM Stalin said that a good outcome came for the resolution passed in the Assembly with the Governor giving his assent for anti-online gambling Bill. With the notification getting issued, the anti-online gambling legislation will also come into force in Tamil Nadu. If found guilty, there might be hefty fines for both parties.
