Manchester City star Erling Haaland’s father Alfie Haaland who was a Man City player himself found himself in controversy. As he travelled to Santiago Bernabeu to support his son for Man City’s Champions League semi-final match against Real Madrid, he got involved in a feud. As he was sitting in the corporate box, it seemed that he was having some sort of clash with Real Madrid fans in front of him involving words and gestures.
Real Madrid fans and reports in Spain claimed that Alfie Haaland actually threw peanuts at the fans in front of them. Several videos emerged of the incident where he could be seen waving his hands as Madrid fans seating in front of him shouted. Then Haaland Sr. made gestures of cupping his ears. Soon it was seen that security came and took Haaland’s entourage away. Haaland Sr. even made an obscene gesture to a fan before he was taken away.
Naturally, the internet picked up on the incident and Alfie Haaland did not hesitate to answer allegations that he was throwing food. He replied on Twitter to a similar post from a Real Madrid fan page saying nothing as such happened. Alfie Haaland’s reply read, “Ok. I did not. Not true. We had some good banter with Madrid fans. They were not happy when City scored. Typical. Then we had to move 50 meters away. Nothing more. All happy. Well nearly…”
He previously replied to another post from Sky Sports News which reported that he was escorted by stadium security. He replied to that post saying, “OK. RM [Real Madrid] was not happy we were celebrating KDB [Kevin De Bruyne’s] goal. Other than that we had to move because RM fans not happy with 1-1”. Apparently, he threw food at the fans at the start of the second half. However, it seems that he had to be escorted inside after he and his entourage were celebrating De Bruyne’s equalizer.
The match between the two sides was absolutely worthy of a Champions League semi-final. It ended 1-1 with a goal each from Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. and Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne. The second leg is set to be held at the Etihad Stadium on 18th May. While Real Madrid have history and impeccable Champions League record on their side, they will be playing this return leg at Man City’s home. Hence, who would progress to the final remains anyone’s guess.
