Harry Maguire has disclosed that he has been relieved of his captaincy at Manchester United following an intense meeting with Erik Ten Hag. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed Maguire as captain in January 2020. The England center-back admitted that he was “extremely disappointed” yet will “continue to give my all” in the jersey.
The England international confirmed the news in a post on social media, which read: “After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed. I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt. So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband. “

After Ashley Young left Manchester United to play for Inter, Harry Maguire took on the role of captain in January 2020. This appointment came just half a year after Maguire became the most expensive defender in the world by joining United from Leicester City.
The 30-year-old quickly established himself as a crucial member of United’s defense, until the arrival of manager Erik ten Hag last year. However, during the 2023-24 season, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez rose above Maguire in terms of status.
Thus within the squad, causing doubt about his captaincy and future at the club. Just recently, Ten Hag informed Maguire that there will be a change in captaincy for the upcoming season, which has left him feeling “extremely disappointed.”

Although absent from United’s initial pre-season match against Leeds, Maguire was granted additional recovery time after representing England in June.
