Erik ten Hag speaks on Harry Maguire’s future at Man United amid West Ham links

Erik ten Hag was asked about the future of Harry Maguire, and he said, "When you are at Man United you have to fight for your position."

Harry Maguire Transfer: Former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire’s future is uncertain and he has been out of the first XI choice in the last 12 months. Man United boss Erik ten Hag provides an update on Harry Maguire’s situation.

Harry Maguire is linked with a move to West Ham following his omission from Man United captaincy. Bruno Fernandes is the new skipper of the Red Devils. Earlier, Maguire also expressed his thoughts on social media on Man United’s captaincy. He is not in the future plan of the club.

Man United manager Erik ten Hag offers some updates on Maguire’s future at Old Trafford. He talked about the Englishman after the club’s pre-season encounter against Borussia Dortmund in the US. The 30-year-old defender is not the choice for Erik ten Hag as he has Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof to take charge in defense.

The Englishman is on radar of the West Ham United who already submitted a bid for him. However, Man United turned down the bid from the Hammers. Erik ten Hag spoke to Manchester Evening News on his future and said, “It’s nothing against Harry, it was an advantage of the team. Then you make the decision,” Ten Hag told the Manchester Evening News about his decision to strip the defender of the captain’s armband.

He also added, “But I will not say that Harry isn’t part of this group. He has to fight for his position. He is a very good centre-back, and I believe in the potential of Harry Maguire. It’s just that he has to prove himself and fight his way into the team. It’s up to him, and I think he can do it.”

The Man United boss was asked about the future call for Maguire, he replied, “Exactly. When you are at Man United you have to fight for your position and bring your skills in and prove you are the best for the team, and contribute the most.”

The former Ajax head mentioned his current best options and considered the competition for a place in the first XI. He added, “See his competition. It’s tough when you’re competing with Rapha Varane and Victor Lindelof. It’s huge competition.

The Dutchman backs Harry Maguire but he wants a special game from him to find a place in XI. He added, “That has nothing to do with the belief. I have often chosen a player ahead of Harry, that’s true. But that says nothing about me not believing in him. He has to show he is better for the team than Rapha or Victor. I think that’s a normal situation in top football.”

The Man United boss is known for his strict calls and he has shown his character in the debut season. He allowed David de Gea to leave Old Trafford this summer. Harry Maguire is still there but he will not make it to the first XI. The Englishman has to fight out to get his place back.

The 30-year-old defender has another option to leave and find an opportunity with West Ham. Meanwhile, it depends on the second bid from the London-based club. If the Hammers go with the Englishman, they have to struggle to meet hefty wage demands.
