Brief scores: SA 151 all out (Rabada 36, Anderson 3/32, Broad 3/37) & 23/0 vs England 415/9d (Foakes 113*, Stokes 103, Nortje 3/82)

South Africa began the day well with Anrich Nortje bagging two early wickets to dismiss Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley. With England struggling at 147/5, Stokes and Foakes added 173-run for the 6th wicket to rescue the hosts. Their stand not only took England clear but also put them in command.

Earlier, Stokes and Foakes shared an impressive partnership of 173 after coming together with England wobbling at 147-5 after a double strike by fast bowler Anrich Nortje.

By recalling Simon Harmer as a second spinner to their attack, in the hope the pitch at Old Trafford would offer more turn as the game went on, South Africa had almost been obliged to bat first upon winning the toss.

But off-spinner Harmer, a prolific wicket-taker with county side Essex, and slow left-armer Keshav Maharaj could only manage three late-order wickets between them for a combined 151 runs in 45.4 overs Harmer’s first delivery on Friday, a full toss, was stroked through the covers for four by Foakes and, three balls later, Stokes swept him for six.

Left-handed batsman Stokes, 34 not out at lunch, completed a 101-ball fifty when he lofted Harmer for six in classic style. Stokes went into the 80s with a straight six off Maharaj, before Foakes completed a well-made fifty off 116 balls.

And for all the talk of a new ‘Bazball’ aggressive style, the 31-year-old Stokes’s well-paced innings — his 12th hundred in 85 Tests and fourth against South Africa — was also a triumph of largely orthodox batting.

Foakes then added to the Proteas’ woes by going to his second hundred in 16 Tests when the 29-year-old late cut fast bowler Nortje for a ninth four in 206 balls faced.

What happened on DAY 1? South Africa captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat first and what followed was a nightmare batting performance by the Proteas. Sarel Erwee fell in Anderson’s first spell while Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen soon joined him as the visitors were left reeling at 40/3.

The situation did not get any better with England captain Ben Stokes chipping in with couple of wickets late in the session as South Africa headed to Lunch at 77/5. Anderson and Broad struck once again soon after the game resumed as South Africa were in real danger of not crossing the 100-run mark.

However, new ball bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje stitched a valuable 35-run stand, the highest of the South African innings. They took Proteas past 150 before Jack Leach and Ollie Robinson helped themselves to the final two wickets. Rabada was SA’s top scorer with 36 to his name.

In response, England lost Alex Lees early but a shaky Zak Crawley look determined to bat for a long time at the crease. Ollie Pope brandished an array of shots before an Anrich Nortje peach cleaned him up. Joe Root did not last long as Rabada struck with England slipping to 43/3.

However, Crawley and Bairstow batted out the rest of the day to take England past 100 and put them in command of the Test. While Crawley held his ground, Jonny scored in his trademark Bazball style, racing to 38 off just 45 balls before Stumps.
