Notably, Root played an incredible knock of unbeaten 115 runs from 170 deliveries, which helped England chase down the target set by the Kiwis. With this knock, he also became the second English cricketer to score 10,000+ runs in Test cricket, behind only Sir Alastair Cook.

What makes Root’s achievement even more special is that he is the first batter in Test history to complete 10,000 runs in less than 10 years. Besides that, among the current ‘Fab 4‘ of Root, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Babar Azam, the Englishman become the first player to attain five-figure runs tally in the longest format of the game.

Quite understandably, the English dressing room was ecstatic while welcoming their star after his match-winning knock. Meanwhile, as far as the game is concerned, the Three Lions had a good start to their new era, under the captaincy of Ben Stokes and the stewardship of Brendon McCullum.
