Chris Woakes injury – The England pacer suffered the injury on West Indies tour and had to pull out of IPL 2022. He was also part of the contingent that played in the 4-0 humiliation during the Ashes while also being part of the England team that played in the T20 World Cup. The consequences of the tight schedule now mean that he will miss the opener against the Kiwis.

No need for surgery – Although Woakes will miss the opening Test there is no need for any surgery. That could see him return for the second Test at Trent Bridge. The second Test could serve as the perfect occasion for him to return unless he is got to go under the knife.
