ENG beat SL Highlights: Jos ‘The Boss’ Buttler’s first century of tournament puts England one step closer to semifinals, beat Sri Lanka by 26 runs

After being put in to bat, England had a shaky start as they lost three wickets early on inside the powerplay. Eoin Morgan’s side faced the first blow in 2nd over when Wanindu Hasaranga bowled Jason Roy. D Chameera provided another blow to England as he bowled Dawid Malan in the fifth over. Returning to bowl the last over of the powerplay, Wanindu Hasaranga quickly removed J Bairstow for a duck and pushed England on the backfoot with the score reading 36/3.

However, Eoin Morgan & Joss Buttler then took England’s innings forward and added 100 runs partnership for the 4th wicket to bring back the game in their favour. Morgan, who struggled in starting, scored 40 off 36 before Wanindu Hasarange removed him in the 19th over with England’s score reading 147/2.

Buttler, however, continued his onslaught and finished it off in style, bringing up his maiden T20I century on the last ball of the innings, with England’s score reading 163/4.

Buttler also became the only English player to hit centuries in all three formats of the game.

Coming to chase, Sri Lanka faced a similar fate and lost three wickets inside the powerplay. Sri Lanka lost P Nissanka early on in the first wicket due to a mix-up. Coming at number 03, Charith Asalanka tried to up the ante and hit a couple of boundaries before being dismissed by Adil Rashid at 21 off 16 deliveries in the fourth over. He then removed Kusal Perera in the sixth over, picking up his second for the night. At powerplay, Sri Lanka’s score read 40/3.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa then played a handy little cameo of 26 off 18 before Chris Woakes removed him in the 11th over with Sri Lanka’s score reading 77/5.

Hasaranga & skipper Dasun Shanaka then resurrected the run-chase with the highest 6th wickets partnership for SL vs ENG in T20Is before Liam Livingstone removed Hasaranga on the back of brilliant teamwork from Jason Roy and Sam Billings at the ropes.
