Hazard, Belgium’s World Cup captain, failed to live up to expectations and had a disappointing tournament. The Real Madrid man has not been at his best in recent years due to repeated injuries. These have hampered his form, and this was evident in Qatar. Hazard struggled to find solutions for his squad as Belgium struggled to score goals in all three group-stage encounters.
Captain Hazard did not play all 90 minutes of Belgium’s games in Qatar. He was removed after 60 minutes in the first two games before being benched for the crucial match against Croatia. The Real Madrid forward was subsequently introduced with only three minutes remaining. He was unable to help his team qualify for the round of 16.
Hazard was the most iconic player for Belgium’s lauded “golden generation,” which advanced to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia in 2018. In 126 international appearances, the 31-year-old scored 36 goals for Belgium.
