Which Fighters Did ‘Diamond’ Poirier Lose Against?
- Dustin Poirier vs Danny Castillo
The fight happened in August 2010. Castillo opened with a right inside low kick. Poirier is then forced against the fence by Castillo, who holds him there. Following some back and forth, Castillo punched Poirier in the head. But Poirier gets away from the threat swiftly. He attempts to knee, but Castillo successfully blocks it and uses forceful blows to end the round.
Poirier opens the second round with a charge. Castillo avoids some jabs he throws. Later, the latter engages in leg kicks. In the ensuing back and forth, Poirier accidentally caught Castillo in the submission, which nearly led to his loss but allowed him to survive.
Both boxers settled for a grappling exhibition in round three. Poirier applied a triangle choke after a few early exchanges, but Castillo cleverly escaped and jumped on top of Poirier. He put a choke on himself, but Poirier remained standing until the bell rang.
Castillo ultimately prevailed over Poirier by a unanimous judgement.
- Dustin Poirier vs Chan Sung Jung
Poirier made his UFC debut at UFC 125 and went on to win 4 straight fights. At UFC on Fuel TV 3, he faced Chan Sung Jung in his following fight.
In contrast to his usual approach, Jung began Round 1 with a far more technical strategy. ‘The Korean Zombie’ was taking advantage of Poirier’s errors and landing a couple of takedowns of his own while picking his locations and defending Poirier’s takedowns.
In the second round, Jung launched a barrage of blows, including several spinning back fists, flying knees, and strikes. He attempted an armbar and a triangle choke, but Poirier maintained his composure and escaped.
Poirier got off to a good start in round three after realising he’s been on the back foot since the fight started. He began his hitting assault with quick movements because he was aware that Jung had poor cardiovascular health. Poirier busted up Jung’s face with his strikes during this round.
Both men engaged in some grappling to start the fourth. Something that was to Jung’s benefit. After some back-and-forth, ‘The Korean Zombie’ eventually trapped Poirier in a brabo choke, which effectively ended the fight for him.
- Dustin Poirier vs Cub Swanson
Poirier bounced back effectively after falling to Jung. At the season finale of The Ultimate Finale, he defeated Jonathan Brookins.
At UFC on Fuel TV 7, he faced Cub Swanson in the next fight. Poirier first at Swanson with some striking, but Swanson deflected his advance with a series of punches. He strikes Poirier hard and comes close to killing him with a right, but Poirier lives.
Swanson persisted in his assault, but Poirier managed to win that one. Both combatants engaged in leg kick attacks in the second round. Swanson landed on the canvas after being caught by one of them. Poirier, however, was unable to profit. Swanson ultimately made a kimura lock threat, but Poirier held out until the bell sounded.
Both combatants traded blows back and forth in the third round. Swanson managed to get Poirier in a sleeper due to a little lapse in focus on his part. He held that stance the entire time and wouldn’t let Poirier budge.
There was no stoppage finish in the end. Swanson, however, won the fight by unanimous decision because he was clearly superior to Poirier.
- Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor
At that time, McGregor was beginning to make his mark on the global scene. Poirier was a rising talent as well. At UFC 178, the UFC put them up against one another. As opposed to their current category, it was a featherweight match. Poirier moved in a straight line that was easy to predict.
He failed to get past McGregor’s defences. McGregor avoided an uppercut and successfully landed a few spin kicks. Then, after down his Poirier with a punch, he pounced for additional offence, causing the referee to stop play in 46 seconds.
- Dustin Poirier vs Michael Johnson
Following his defeat to McGregor, Poirier swiftly recovered and won four straight fights. When he met Johnson at UFC Fight Night 94, he aimed to build on that momentum.
With a victory over Johnson, Poirier hoped to challenge for the championship. After some significant defeats to Nate Diaz and Beneil Dariush, the latter was in dire need of a victory.
Johnson knocked out his opponent with a clean right hand in the blink of an eye after the bout began slowly with neither man delivering any notable blows. He pursued him to the ground and swung his punches in a barrage that seriously injured Poirier. At 1:35 of Round 1, the referee stepped in and formally declared the bout over.
- Dustin Poirier vs Khabib Nurmagomedov
In order to defend his title against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Poirier entered the octagon. They fought each other at UFC 242. For a bout for the interim lightweight title, “Diamond” had defeated Holloway. But he was aware that Khabib had the position he had his sights set on.
Khabib was on a completely different level than Holloway, who Poirier beat as one of the all-time greats of the sport. As he proceeded to thwart Poirier’s striking strategy, the latter demonstrated his proficiency in the sport.
The Eagle used ground controls to the fullest extent possible to stay one step ahead of Poirier. Poirier attempted to guillotine Khabib at one point throughout the game, but the latter immediately stopped him. Then he re-entered Poirier’s space and gave him a rear-naked choke to put him to sleep.
- Dustin Poirier vs Charles Oliveira
Against Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira successfully defended the UFC lightweight championship, extending his winning streak to nine fights. In the third round, the Brazilian sensation used a rear naked choke to finish Poirier off.
The fact that Dustin Poirier failed in both of his tries to win the UFC lightweight championship may have wounded him the most. The first time was in September 2019 at UFC 242, when she faced Khabib Nuragomedov.
Poirier had previously stated he would be on the lookout for circumstances in which he would be required to give up his back and avert them at all costs. However, ‘The Diamond’ was unable to keep Oliveira off of him, which is understandable given the history of the champs.
