Young Yashasvi Jaiswal scored his maiden half-century on Test debut on Day 2 of IND vs WI 1st Test. With a patient knock, Jaiswal has made a strong case as long-time opener for Team India in Tests. Jaiswal, who started Day 2 on 40, complete his half-century in 104 balls in 33rd over with a boundary.
The boundary also brought up a 100-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal. Notably, this is the first 100-run opening stand for India in 22 Test innings.

Both batters looked comfortable on Day 1 as they managed to score runs with ease. Earlier on Day 1, Ravichandran Ashwin’s 33rd five-wicket haul put India in control as they bundled out the hosts for 150. Apart from Ashwin, spinner Ravindra Jadeja also took a three-wicket haul.
Jaiswal surpasses Sachin & Shubman
With a brilliant fifty on Test debut, Jaiswal has surpassed legendary Sachin Tendulkar and teammate Shubman Gill.
Before his Test cricket debut, Yashasvi Jaiswal had an average of 80.21 in first-class cricket. This is the third-highest average for any Indian batsman. Sachin Tendulkar had an average of 70.18 in his first 9 first-class matches before his Test debut, while Gill had an average of 68.78 in his first 23 first-class matches.
Good opportunity to score a century: Ishant Sharma
Veteran India fast bowler Ishant Sharma after the end of Day 1 said that openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have a good opportunity to score a century.
“Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal will look to be guarded in their approach in the first hour. They will say to themselves that it’s ok even if we don’t score runs, because we already have a strong base. They will try to score the remaining 70 runs by taking their time because there’s still a lot of time in this game,” Ishant said on Jio Cinema.
Sharma also said Jaiswal should target a century.
“He now has a platform to build on. He should first try to reach his fifty and then gradually build his innings. It’s a great opportunity for him to target a century.”
If Jaiswal manages to reach the three-figure mark, he will join the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan on the list of Indian left handers who have scored century on debut.
