‘Difficult to get opportunities..’ Yashasvi Jaiswal emotional after maiden Test 100

Yashasvi Jaiswal also thanked Rohit Sharma and management for giving him opportunity to open the innings against West Indies

Yashasvi Jaiswal made the most of his opportunities by converting his start into a sublime hundred on his debut Test match against West Indies. As expected during the post-match play on day two, the southpaw got very emotional and dedicated his hundred to the ones who have made immense sacrifices on his journey to becoming a cricketer. The 21-year-old thanked his coaches, parents, and all others who have been a massive help to him.

After being unbeaten on 40 on day one, Jaiswal started day two on a positive note and never missed an opportunity to dispatch the loose balls onto the fence. The Southpaw also showed a lot of discipline in leaving the wide balls outside off stump. The opening batter adjusted to the outfield well and is still going strong undefeated at 143. On day three, Jaiswal will be aiming to double the score and make his opening slot his own.

With a terrific start to his first-class career, Jaiswal also said that Test cricket is one he likes playing the most as it throws different challenges. A lot was expected of Jaiswal when he got picked for the West Indies in place of Cheteshwar Pujara. There was a lot of debate also on the position he will bat. Head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma asked him to open, and Jaiswal backed it up by just expressing himself on the big stage.

The 21-year-old thanked Rohit and the management for keeping faith in him and giving him the opening slot in place of Shubman Gill. “I think this is one of the emotional knocks for me, it’s difficult to get opportunities in the Indian team, I would like to thank everyone, the supporters, team management, and Rohit Bhai.

The pitch is on the slower side, and the outfield is very slow, it was difficult and challenging, it was pretty hot, and I wanted to keep doing it for my country, just play ball-by-ball and enjoy my cricket,” Jaiswal said after the end of second day’s play.

I love Test cricket, I like this challenge, I enjoy the situation when the ball swings and seams. We have worked hard on everything, I’ve just gone out to express myself. Was an emotional moment (on his century), was just proud of me, thankful for everyone, this is just a start, and I want to do well going further,” Jaiswal added.

India have currently taken a lead of 162 at the end of day two’s play and will look to consolidate that strong position on day three. Along with Jaiswal, Virat Kohli is at the crease undefeated at 36.
