Delhi Capitals to part ways with Shane Watson; Ponting-Ganguly to continue

Ajit Agarkar, who has served as an assistant coach for the past two years, is reportedly in line for a promotion. Pravin Amre will also be given more authority to direct the team.

For the IPL 2024, the Delhi Capitals management has begun reorganising its support staff. Despite a terrible season this year, the management has decided to keep Ricky Ponting as the head coach. But as per reports, assistant coach Shane Watson could be let off by DC.

According to TOI, the team will likely reduce its support staff by parting ways with Shane Watson and James Hopes, who served as assistant coaches and fast bowling coaches, respectively.

“Preparations for next year’s IPL are underway here at Delhi Capitals, alongside Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting. We assure the fans that Kiran (Grandhi, co-owner) and I are working hard to get back to where we want this franchise to be and that is right at the very top,” DC co-owner Parth Jindal tweeted on Wednesday.

DC has no plans to bring in any substitute coaches for Hopes and Shane Watson. Less support workers is more important in order to improve clarity.

Since 2015, Amre has done well in giving this team a solid core of young players. He will have unrestricted freedom to rebuild the side.

When the Capitals performed well between 2019 and 2022, Ponting and Amre were frequently involved, a source informed TOI.

In IPL 2023, DC failed to win any of the first five games, despite their best efforts under new captain David Warner.

Despite the early defeats, Capitals persevered and put together a streak of outstanding performances, winning four of the following five games.

For the squad, David Warner’s return home as a batter was successful. He played the top position consistently and amassed an astounding 516 runs at an average of 36.16.

The performance of Axar Patel was the biggest plus for DC this season. His main duty was to bowl left-arm spin, but due to his excellent batting performance this year, he was Capital’s second-highest run scorer, only behind Warner. Axar picked up 11 wickets at an economy rate of 7.19 while scoring 283 runs at a strike rate of over 140.
