Some of the most admired people in the world are footballers. Footballers have become role models for many as a result of the media’s extensive coverage of every part of their lives. However, a select few athletes have occasionally made headlines for the incorrect reasons, suffering punishments for criminal offences or even going to jail.

From George Best to Ronaldinho, let us take a look at top footballers who served jail time:

  1. Joey Barton: On the field, Joey Barton frequently found himself at the centre of a dispute. He was also involved in a number of situations outside of it. The international for England has twice done time in prison for violent offences. He struck a pedestrian with his car in Liverpool City Center, causing the first of the two accidents. As a result, the court found him guilty of assault, and he spent 77 days in jail. Barton was also banned from football for four months while serving this term. This occurred as a result of his admission that he had abused Ousmane Dabo, a former teammate from Manchester City.
  2. Ian Wright: Simply put, the former star of Arsenal and Crystal Palace believed he could get away with something wholly unnecessary. Wright had owned two cars, but he made the decision to forgo paying their taxes and insurance. Time things undoubtedly went smoothly for a while, the authorities eventually caught on, and he was given a 14-day prison sentence for his actions—or lack thereof. Ian Wright, at only 19 years old, served time in prison. The legendary Arsenal player was sentenced to two weeks in Chelmsford Prison in 1982 after refusing to pay taxes or insurance for his two cars.

  3.  George Best: Best, one of the best players to ever represent Manchester United, had a wild lifestyle off the field that detracted from his career and life. Best’s well-known alcoholism frequently hampered his football career. Best’s life began to spiral out of control in 1984. He spent some time in jail after being found guilty of drunk driving, assaulting a police officer, and not appearing for his bail. But Best’s wild lifestyle would finally get the best of him; his alcoholism would take hold, and he would pass away in 2005 at the comparatively young age of 59.

  4. Ronaldinho: Ronaldinho, one of the greatest players in football history, was involved in a fake passport scandal in 2020 and was sentenced to five months in prison. The Brazilian football player was found guilty by the court of falsifying his passport in order to enter Paraguay in 2020. His brother Roberto de Assis was also given a five-year prison term. The two were presented with a plea bargain, which reduced their punishment to five months and required them to pay a combined fine of $200,000. While serving their sentences in Asuncion prison, the pair celebrated Ronaldinho’s 40th birthday there.

  5. Tony Adams: The outstanding Arsenal defender battled alcoholism throughout his whole career. When Adams smashed his automobile into a wall close to his residence in May 1990, this finally caught up with him. He was discovered to be 27 times over the permitted limit after testing. Adams was given a four-month prison term in December, but he was freed in February before the end of his term. In the middle of the 1990s, Adams openly acknowledged that he had a drinking issue and started seeking therapy to start his recovery.
