CWG 2022 LIVE – Murali Sreeshankar WINS Silver: In his rather short career so far, Murali Sreeshankar has been downed by the weight of expectations at the major events. After four attempts as an exit seemed a far more plausible result, the 23-year-old jumped over those doubts to land a stupendous 8.08m jump. It was a tied for the gold, but the Palakad-born athlete had to settle for silver on a technicality in what is the first medal at the Commonwealth Games by a male long jump athlete for India: Check Murali Sreeshankar LONG JUMP video &Follow Commonwealth Games LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN

Murali Sreeshankar clinched a silver in the men’s long jump event to give India a second medal in athletics at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday. The 23-year-old national record holder soared to 8.08m in his fifth attempt to finish second behind Laquan Nairn of Bahamas in a nerve-wracking men’s long jump final. Nairn also had a best jump of 8.08m but his second best of 7.98m was better than the 7.84m of Sreeshankar.
A national record holder and one of India’s biggest prospects, the Kerala-born athlete had struggled to shine on the biggest stage in past. Billed as an exciting talent at the Tokyo Olympics, Sreeshankar put in a lacklustre effort, managing just 7.69m failing to make it past the qualifying stages. At the World Champions in Oregon earlier this year, the 23-year-old was again expected to deliver but finished seventh in the final last month.

Murali Sreeshankar LONG JUMP: Sreeshankar in his first three attempts managed to reach only 7.84, placing him a lowly 6th among the last 8. His fourth jump saw him breach the 8m mark, but the attempt was red flagged for a breach on the footboard. The breach was of millimetres as one could hardly make out from the naked eye if the 23-year-old athlete had overstepped.
Since it’s being decided by technology and not on human eyes so not much to argue but in naked eye this doesn’t look foul to me. Murali Sreeshankar who is having average jumps so far got his best jump fouled 🤦 pic.twitter.com/UZqemDmA6C

However, a determined Sreeshankar bounced back a delivered an 8.08m jump in his fifth attempt, to jump straight into the podium position alongside Laquan Nairn of Bahamas. He made a faulty sixth attempt but it hardly mattered as the silver was confirmed much to the elation of the Kerala-born star. Jovan van Vuuren (8.06m) of South Africa took the bronze.

It is a remarkable story of a comeback from the Palakad prodigy who had missed out on the Gold Coast Games due to an appendix. Reports suggest that Sreeshankar’s appendix had burst and he was under threat of life before making a complete recovery.
Murali Sreeshankar couldn’t compete and nearly died after his appendix burst just before the 2018 CWG. The 23-year-old from Palakkad has returned to win 🥈 in the men’s long jump at the 2022 CWG. In his 2nd last effort he jumps 8.08m – same as Laqan Nairn but loses on countback. pic.twitter.com/MRS2FrmR1Z

Sreeshankar had gone into CWG as gold medal favourite on the basis of his season’s and personal best of 8.36m, which had put him in joint second ranking in the world this season. His silver was the best among Indian male long jumpers in the CWG. Suresh Babu had won a bronze in the 1978 edition.
It is Sreeshankar’s first medal in a major international competition and a multi-sport event. Before this, he had won a bronze in the 2018 Asian U-20 Championships in Gifu, Japan.
