CWG 2022 Breaking News: Big blow for India, Neeraj Chopra miss Commonwealth Games due to an injury concern: Follow LIVE UPDATES

On Sunday, Neeraj Chopra had won a silver medal in men’s javelin at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA.

“Our Olympic Champ @Neeraj_chopra1 will not be defending his title at @birminghamcg22 due to concerns regarding his fitness. We wish him a speedy recovery & are supporting him in these challenging times,” the Indian Olympics Association said in a statement on social media.

How Neeraj Chopra got injured? Neeraj Chopra revealed after winning the World Athletics silver that he picked up a groin injury during the 12-man final in Eugene.

The 24-year-old Olympic champion conceded that a call on his participation in the Commonwealth Games would be taken after medical assessments of his injury.

“During the fourth throw at the World Championship, I felt pain in my groin and have to pullout from CWG 2022”, informed Chopra to IOA.

He underwent a MRI scan the following day and was subsequently advised one-month rest by the doctors.

Chopra had said after Saturday’s final, where he won the silver medal, “that he would be able to gauge the extent of his injury once his body cools down. He had hinted he wouldn’t take any risks vis-à-vis the CWG if the injury requires rehablitation”

As his coaches and physio have suggested him rest, Neeraj Chopra will now be out of action for a month.

At the just concluded World Championship, Neeraj finished second behind Grenada’s Anderson Peters. The man from Grenada won gold with a best attempt of 90.54m.

Peters, 24, had 3 throws in excess of 90m in the men’s javelin final in Eugene as he became only the 2nd man to defend the javelin title at the World Athletics Championships.
