India won three medals each in Gold, Silver and Bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This performance equalled England’s medal tally but since they had more gold medals, India finished second in the medals tally. This time, India will miss the experience of Mary Kom, who won gold medal in the 48 kg Light flyweight category. Lovlina rose to prominence after winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The 24-year old has participated in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, where she couldn’t win a medal. She is now a strong contender to add a Commonwealth Games medal to her kitty. After the Tokyo Olympics, Lovlina had a disappointing show at the World Championship, where she lost in the pre-quarterfinal. She will now look to bounce back in the quadrennial event.
Nikhat Zareen
Nikhat Zareen who won the World Championship Gold medal in the 52 kg category will try to replicate her feat in the Commonwealth Games this year. Nikhat became only the fifth Indian boxer to win the World title this year. She will now compete at the Commonwealth Games in the 50 kg category. Nikhat will have a tough competition in the lightweight category and playing in this weight category for the first time is going to be a big challenge for the 26-year old but the Telangana boxer is expected to surpass the odds and clinch a podium-finish.
Men
Amit Panghal
Amit Panghal won the silver medal in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games and is now aiming to win the yellow metal in the upcoming edition of the quadrennial event. Panghal disappointed at the Tokyo Olympics last year by not winning a medal and he is now much more eager to show his class and get back to his best in a multinational event.
