The Chennai Super Kings, four-time IPL champions, will enter the IPL 2023 Auction with a lot on their plate. The team is looking for the heir to franchise icon MS Dhoni, who can lead the Yellow Brigade into a new era. The franchise has kept a core group of players who are still on the roster. However, before the on-field action begins, the owners must put their thinking caps on.

CSK in search of a new skipper?

The upcoming IPL edition might be the last appearance for Dhoni. CSK might look to find an able candidate for the veteran in the upcoming auction. CSK might target some big names including Kane Williamson and Ben Stokes, but they have several options available in their squad as well. They can also Ruturaj Gaikwad is the prominent contender for the spot.

With MS Dhoni well and truly in the last leg of his competitive career, Chennai is desperately looking for his successor at the IPL 2023 Mini Auction. The CSK management can breathe a sigh of relief for at least till May 2023, with MS Dhoni at the helm.

Players CSK are likely to Target

With their core more or less settled, Chennai has to answer the middle-order crisis, a potential finisher and a death bowler going into the IPL auction.

a. Harry Brook

In the 2022 edition of the tournament, Chennai Super Kings lacked a proper hitter in the middle order. They could look to Harry Brook from England for this role. Brook can be their proper number-four batter. He can attack the conditions when the ball becomes a little old, using his wide range to put the opposition on the back foot.

b. Kane Williamson

The CSK team management may want to hire New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and hand over the captaincy to him. To be sure, CSK has INR 20.45 crore in its coffers, and the Yellow Army may need to spend a significant portion of that sum to secure Williamson in the auction. It remains to be seen whether Williamson will wear the yellow jersey next season.

c. Ben Stokes

England’s star all-rounder Ben Stokes recently played a crucial role with both bat and ball in England winning the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Stokes played alongside MS Dhoni in his debut season in IPL 2017 for Rising Pune Supergiant. To note, he was also adjudged player of the tournament for making significant contributions to Pune’s progress till the final. Dhoni would also know Stokes as a character in the dressing room; someone who leads by example and commands respect from his teammates.

Chennai Super Kings is in a transition period, and the departure of MS Dhoni at the end of the 2023 season will be a seismic shift for the franchise. MS Dhoni would like to leave the franchise in the hands of someone who can take it to unprecedented heights, at least for the next decade or so, now that Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo have retired.

IPL Auction 2023 – Key details

• The auction is scheduled for December 23 in Kochi.
• The purse value of all teams has been increased by 5 crores, making a total of INR 95 crores for each team.
• Out of their total purse value, the franchises need to spend a minimum of 75% during the auction event.
• Earlier, from a list of 991 players, a total of 369 players from 10 teams were shortlisted. However, 36 additional players were added to the final list on request of the teams, making a total of 405 players to be presented at the IPL auction.
• Out of 405 players, 273 are Indian cricketers, and 132 are overseas, including four from associate nations.
• The total capped players are 119, uncapped players are 282 and 4 from associate nations.
• A maximum of 87 slots are now available, with up to 30 being allocated for overseas players.
• The auction will start at 14:30 IST.
