On Wednesday, all IPL franchises officially confirmed their entry in the CSA T20 League. The former South Africa captain Smith did not renew his contract as the CSA director amid racism allegations and investigations. While he was cleared of all charges, he chose not to return and instead signed up as a commentator for IPL 2022.
“We are thrilled to welcome our new franchise owners to the South African League taking place in January and February 2023. This is truly an exciting time for South African cricket; the overwhelming interest shows that the country remains valued in the global cricketing eco-system,” CSA said in an official statement.

Kingsmead, Durban | RPSG Sports Private Limited (Lucknow Super Giants) |
St George’s Park, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) | Sun TV Network Limited (Sunrisers Hyderabad) |

MI and CSK placed the biggest financial bids, close to Rs 250 crore. As the IPL model goes, each franchise will have to pay 10 per cent of the franchise fee for 10 years. The franchises have recently seen an influx of South African talent, with MI giving chances to Tristan Stubbs, and Dewald Brevis while CSK has had the likes of Faf du Plessis and Lungi Ngidi among their ranks previously.

Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka will own the Durban franchise. Sunrisers meanwhile could have their team based out of Port Elizabeth, while the Rajsthan Royals are expected to take over the Paarl franchise.
CSA’s League is likely to clash with UAE’s ILT20 while as many as five T20 leagues set to collide in January – February next year. A competition to secure the services of top T20 stars will ensue but the IPL links should help CSA’s league topple others. The likes of Jason Roy, and Jonny Bairstow are more inclined towards the South African competition, while IPL regulars Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo will also take part. Moeen Ali however is likely to ply his trade in UAE.
