After moving from Man United to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, he will also have a new Head Coach for his National Team, Portugal. Martinez spoke about creating the best team going forward at his first press conference. He said, ‘Decisions are made on the pitch. I don’t make decisions in the office. I hope to contact all the players.’ Talking specifically about Ronaldo, Martinez said, ‘Cristiano Ronaldo is a player that makes the list. He has been in the national team for 19 years. I hope we can sit down with him and create the best team. It’s a day of great satisfaction, but tomorrow we’ll get down to business.’

Martinez has quite some decisions to make as he has two sides of the coin to deal with. One side involves players who are at the end of their careers – Ronaldo, Pepe, Rui Patricio, etc. Whereas, the other side has a bunch of exciting young players like Joao Felix, Goncalo Ramos, Ruben Dias, Rafael Leao, etc.

The new Coach spoke about how he wants to get to know his players through ‘a footballing process’. He continued, ‘We’re going to start a footballing process to try to get to know all the players that could make it to the national team. We’re going to give all the players an opportunity and respect all those who are already in the national team. Cristiano is one of them’

Ronaldo is in the twilight of his career and he is not getting any younger. It will be interesting to see if Martinez counts on the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner or if he decides to move on to the younger crop of players. Another thing to note will be if Ronaldo accepts a bench role if he is offered one. All the answers will be clear come the next International Break.
