Cristiano Ronaldo has been pictured working out alongside his Portugal teammates after touching down in Lisbon ahead of their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. He was taking part in a stretching session and also doing some light conditioning on the bike with his teammates.
Later this month, Portugal will play both Liechtenstein and Luxembourg as part of their route toward the European Championships.
Cristiano Ronaldo selected by new coach
Ronaldo has been selected by new coach, Roberto Martinez even though there has been a lot of uncertainty around his international future.
It was rumored that Ronaldo might retire after Portugal got knocked out of the World Cup. Ronaldo crashed out of what is expected to be his last World Cup when Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-final of the tournament in Qatar.
Even during the World Cup, he was not a central figure in the Portuguese team as he was benched quite a lot through the tournament. Even in their Quarterfinal defeat to Morocco, Ronaldo came off the bench to replace Ruben Neves in the second half with Portugal trailing 1-0 after Youssef En-Nesyri’s opener. But, he failed to inspire a comeback.
Ronaldo was quite upset after the game too and was seen walking off the pitch with tears in his eyes. Many said that the emotion was due to him deciding to retire but he was quick to squash that rumor. He was surprisingly quiet when Fernando Santos, the coach with whom he won the Euro 2016 was sacked after the tournament.
After Santos was sacked, former Belgium coach Roberto Martinez was hired for Portugal. When asked early on if he would rely on Ronaldo, he said that this is a fresh start for everybody and Ronaldo too. Martinez has decided to back Cristiano for these two qualifiers. Only time will tell if Ronaldo is an undisputed starter or if he has to earn his place back.
