Trouble for Cristiano Ronaldo? US court to hear arguments in assault allegation case

Cristiano Ronaldo is in deep water as his attorneys are summoned after allegations of his assault on Kathryn Mayorga in 2009 resurface.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s attorneys will have to go back to court in order to defend their client against assault charges. A counsel for the lady has asked the court to reverse the case’s dismissal in June 2022 and revive the civil complaint she originally filed in Nevada in 2018. Ronaldo has never faced charges in connection with the claims.

Ronaldo has denied abusing Kathryn Mayorga in the United States in 2009. Mayorga, the accused victim, first got £275,000 from Ronaldo in a court settlement as claimed ‘hush money’ in 2010.

Ronaldo’s solicitors alleged that the money was offered to keep either side from discussing it. They continued to insist that the football legend was not guilty of the crimes levelled against him.

In 2018, Mayorga’s attorneys allegedly sought to void the earlier deal in return for a larger settlement by pursuing a civil action rather than a criminal one. They aim to fight the matter further and are apparently planning to demand millions more’ from the Portuguese star.

The case garnered media attention, with the public adopting strong opinions in an emotionally charged issue. Ronaldo’s team continued to dispute the allegations, and the player issued a statement in 2018.

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. R*** is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.” Ronaldo claimed.

In June 2022, US District Judge Jennifer Dorsey allegedly dismissed Mayorga’s defence team’s appeal. It was based on the claimed victim’s attorneys using stolen sensitive documents.

According to the most recent developments, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has been petitioned to reverse their prior rejection. As a result, the civil matter has been re-administered. This has apparently prompted Ronaldo’s legal team to return to court on Wednesday.

Mayorga, the plaintiff in the case against Ronaldo, claimed in 2009 that the player assualted her in a hotel room in Las Vegas. Ronaldo’s lawyers contended that the contact was consensual, contradicting her story. The $275,000 was handed to the claimed victim to ensure that neither party discussed the situation in public.

According to reports, the district attorney in Las Vegas dismissed the criminal case against the Portuguese footballer. According to the article (via Daily Mail), Mayorga’s civil action and appeal were dismissed.
