Yusuf Pathan joins TMC ahead of Lok Sabha polls, to contest from Berhampore in West Bengal

From 2008 to 2012, the former all-rounder for India participated in 22 T20 Internationals and 57 One-Day Internationals while representing his country.

Former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan on Sunday took the plunge into the realm of politics. The Baroda cricketer joined All India Trinamool Congress and will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Berhampore in West Bengal. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury—the state president of the Congress who presently represents Berhampore in the Lok Sabha—will go up against Yusuf.

From 2008 to 2012, the former all-rounder for India participated in 22 T20 Internationals and 57 One-Day Internationals while representing his country. He played for both the Indian squad that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.

Yusuf already had a connection with West Bengal in the past. Yusuf was previously a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders team. He is very well-liked in the city because he single-handedly won numerous matches for the Knight Riders franchise. Pathan had played a pivotal role in KKR’s success, especiall during the title winning seasons of 2012 and 2014. Pathan has been playing in a lot of exhibition matches lately.

Yusuf took to Twitter after the announcement to thank TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee for providing him with a chance to serve the people.

“I’m eternally grateful to Smt. @mamataofficial for welcoming me into the TMC family and trusting me with the responsibility to become people’s voice in the Parliament. As representatives of the people, it is our duty to uplift the poor and deprived, and that is what I hope to achieve,” said Yusuf.
