“Younis Khan said no to Pakistan”: Rashid Latif reveals why Khan joined Afghanistan as mentor

Afghanistan take on Australia in a must-win clash at Lahore on Friday

Just before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy, Younis Khan was appointed as the mentor of the Afghanistan Cricket Team. Former Pakistani cricketer Rashid Latif claimed that Younis had refused an opportunity to work with the Pakistan Cricket Team. He further explained that Younis had no financial benefits.

It has been a contrasting affair for both Afghanistan and Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The hosts of the tournament, i.e. The Men in Green, were eliminated from the tournament after losing both their games against New Zealand and India. Meanwhile, Afghanistan defeated England to remain alive for a spot in the semis.

No Financials Involved

“Younis Khan said no to Pakistan cricket to work with Afghanistan. There will be no financial benefits here,” Latif stated on Pakistan’s TV show ‘Haarna Mana Hai’.

Team Afghanistan has adopted a fine strategy in choosing mentors for mega events based on the hosts of the tournament. For the ODI World Cup 2023, they hired Ajay Jadeja as the squad mentor. Come the Champions Trophy, they have decided to appoint Younis Khan.

“Since the Champions Trophy is being held in Pakistan, it was required to assign a talented and experienced player as a mentor from the hosting country. We already had efficient experience with hosting countries’ mentors in ODI World Cup 2023 and T20I World Cup 2024,” ACB chief executive Naseeb Khan said previously.

For Afganistan, the pursuit for the semi finals of the tournament still continues. The Pathans will take on the mighty Australian side on Friday at Lahore. It will be a must-win game for the side.
