Young Australian cricketer Will Pucovski’s career comes to an abrupt end

Will Pucovski, the Australian cricketer, is set to retire at 26 due to head injuries. Medical experts advised him to end his career.

An injury ended a young cricketer’s career. Australian cricketer Will Pucovski is set to retire from the sport. According to the Australian media, the 26-year-old will retire due to his recent head injuries. Following recommendations from medical experts, Pucovski has come to this decision. The prodigy has suffered a series of head injuries in the past, the latest of which came in March when he suffered a concussion.

A sports journalist from Nine News said, “My understanding is that an independent panel of experts recommended Pucovski retire three months ago, and all that’s left is for Cricket Victoria and his team to formalise that contractually.”

“The news doesn’t come as a surprise to Pucovski’s teammates, who haven’t seen him at training all pre-season. In fact, he’s been travelling overseas,” he added.

Not just concussions, but stress and trauma

It wasn’t just concussions that caused Pucovski’s problems. A medical panel in 2022 determined that some of his head injuries were “not true concussions” and were more likely responses to stress or trauma.

There was hope that he could put together a long, concussion-free run of form, as Australia looked for a long-term replacement at the top of the order, but that didn’t happen.

Played only one Test against India

The former batting prodigy gained national attention when he was named in the Test squad in January 2019, before turning 21. He played his only Test match against India at the SCG. Pucovski scored 62 and 10 while opening the batting with David Warner, but a shoulder injury during the match sidelined him for about six months.
