The India Cricket Team’s 3-1 loss in the Border Gavaskar Trophy has opened the Pandora’s Box. Former players have bashed the Indian stars for not playing domestic cricket which has led to their downfall. Sunil Gavaskar was particularly harsh in pointing out that if senior players opt out of domestic cricket then head coach Gautam Gambhir needs to take calls accordingly.
Over the years, the Indian senior players have opted out of playing domestic cricket, especially the Ranji Trophy. It has been 13 years since Virat Kohli played Ranji Trophy matches. He last played way back in 2012 while Rohit Sharma in 2016.
No commitment, No Game Time
“On January 23, there is the next round of the Ranji Trophy. Let’s see how many players from this squad play. If you do not play those matches, then I say that Gautam Gambhir will have to take a few tough decisions, saying, ‘you do not have that commitment, we need commitment, you are not playing’,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
Sunil Gavaskar has made his stance very clear. If claimed that he wants to see how many players of the BGT squad will now opt to play Ranji Trophy. He claimed that if these players don’t play domestic cricket, then it means that they don’t have the commitment needed to play the game.
He also further added that in such a case head coach Gautam Gambhir needs to take a firm call in dropping them. Gavaskar made it clear if the players show no commitment to playing domestic cricket then they are not playing in the team.

“Without game time in the middle, their game will stagnate… The switch from the red ball to the white ball is easy, but when it is the other way round, it is challenging. When you play Ranji games frequently, you will be in rhythm,” a team management member told Indian Express.
The BCCI has always advocated asking the Indian stars to play the domestic format of the game. Last year, then BCCI Secretary Jay Shah informed everyone that players need to start playing domestic cricket or else there would be consequences. And two players, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were snubbed off their BCCI Central contract for doing so.
