Shami had a fantastic 2023, being India’s best bowler in the ODI World Cup 2023 in spite of being dropped for the first four matches. Shami picked up 24 wickets in seven matches for India, becoming India’s highest wicket taker in the World Cup. His performance prompted the Sports Ministry to recommend Shami’s name for India’s second-highest sporting honour Arjuna Award in spite of not being featured in the initial list.
Shami on Tuesday was present at the Rashtrapati Bhawan to receive the award from India’s President Draupadi Murmu.
Ravi Shastri, who has seen the Indian pacer from close quarters during his coaching days with the Men in Blue, took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Shami.
“Congratulations, @MdShami11. Your relentless pursuit for excellence in tough times is something to be admired by one and all. You deserve recognition and honour for your achievements in total. God bless,” Shastri said in a post on X.
