Yograj Singh spoke about the viral “chappal (slipper)” emoji in Yuvraj Singh’s tweets after Abhishek Sharma’s stunning fifty against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. He also shared how his son played a key role in mentoring the Sunrisers Hyderabad star.
Yuvraj Singh’s “chappal” emoji story
Abhishek Sharma won Player of the Match in March 2024 after striking a scorching 63 off 23 balls to help SRH defeat the Mumbai Indians by 31 runs in a high-scoring match. Yuvraj Singh, however, was not quite content because he had hoped that his protégé would turn it into a century.
“Waah sir Abhishek waah great innings but what a splendid shot to get out on! Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante! Special chappal waiting for you now Abhishek Sharma,” Yuvraj had written on X.
When Abhishek crushed a record 135 against England in a home Twenty20 International series earlier this year, the word “chappal” came up again. Yuvraj then commented, “Well played @IamAbhiSharma4! That’s where I want to see you! Proud of you.”
Abhishek playfully replied that he was glad to receive a message that didn’t end with the usual threat of being ‘hit by a chappal.’
Yograj Singh explained the ‘Chappal’ reference
When Yograj first saw Abhishek playing, he advised Yuvraj to keep his “nightlife” under control and concentrate solely on cricket, according to an interview with former Indian cricketer Taruwar Kohli on his podcast, “Find a Way.” He acknowledged that Yuvraj was very rigid about obeying orders.
I told Yuvraj to keep Abhishek’s nightlife under control while he was performing, and he did just that, preventing him from moving around. Fortunately, he managed to keep the shoes—that allusion to slippers—in his hands. He said that taming wild horses requires firmly capturing their hair.
