Not too long ago, both Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad were part of the India cricket team’s ODI side. Both openers by trade, they often played in the absence of either Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill. Now, both aren’t even part of the main 15 or 18 in 50-over cricket. That reason isn’t exactly their form but a combination of the emergence of Yashasvi Jaiswal and the lack of ODI matches in the last 12 months.
Such has been the scarcity of 50-over games that Jaiswal hasn’t even made his debut. Since the ODI World Cup 2023, Team India has played just 6 ODIs. Gaikwad has played in 2 of these, while Kishan, who was part of the World Cup team and even played in 2 games, couldn’t get a chance.
Ishan Kishan & Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ODI and List A stats
Innings | Runs | Average | 100s | 50s | Highest Score | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ishan Kishan (ODIs) | 24 | 933 | 42.40 | 1 | 7 | 210 |
Ruturaj Gaikwad (List A) | 81 | 4312 | 57.49 | 16 | 17 | 220* |
Even Yashasvi Jaiswal not confirmed
Yet, you could say that they aren’t even near Team India’s squad for the India vs. England ODIs and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. As mentioned above, a major reason for this is Jaiswal. Despite his talent and exceptional List A record, Jaiswal hasn’t been made to make it to the ODI squad.
Right now, he seems better than he’s ever looked. There might still be a chance that he doesn’t make it to Team India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and be part of the travelling reserve, but if the chance comes, Jaiswal will be picked over Kishan and Gaikwad.
A reason for that is Jaiswal’s international record and the fact that his game seems to be built for ODIs. He’s great at rotating the strike and can show intent in the powerplay. On top of that, we know he can flip the switch and go absolutely berserk. He’s done in T20Is, IPL, and even Test cricket. Moreover, he’s a guy who scores big when the opportunity is there to be taken.
Kishan & Gaikwad’s domestic form
Neither Kishan nor Gaikwad has performed well in the only 50-over tournament before the squad for the India vs. England ODIs and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Kishan averages 45 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 and isn’t even the best batter in Jharkhand’s side. The same goes for Gaikwad, who also averages but isn’t even in Maharashtra’s top three run-getters.
You can’t expect the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selector to pick you if you don’t break the door down. They already had little to no chance to make it to the squad, but such performances don’t make their case. Look at Prabhsimran Singh or Abhishek Sharma. Both have over 440 runs and are forcing the selectors to look at them, but Gaikwad and Kishan haven’t done anything to be included in the squad chat.
