Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill become part of unwanted record in IND vs SA 2nd T20I

Both openers departed without troubling the scorers, and in doing so they went into the history books for a feat that they would not like to be remembered for

India had a dismal start to their IND vs SA 2nd T20I match. Put in to bat by the Proteas after winning the toss, Indian openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal seemed to be a hurry. Both the openers departed without troubling the scorers, and in doing so, they went into the history books for a feat that they would not like to be remembered for.

Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal become only the second opening pair in India’s T20I history to depart without scoring a single run. The first pair to achieve this feat was Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane against Pakistan in 2016.

Yashasvi Jaiswal faced the new ball against South Africa’s Marco Jansen. In the third ball of the inning Jansen bowled a slightly short-pitched delivery with a hint of room. Yashasvi recognised the room instantly, and went on back-foot to cut hard. But his cut was a bit uppish and provided a chance to David Miller to catch the ball. Miller took a smart catch at cover to neutralise Yashasvi.

Shubman Gill followed Yashasvi in the second over, missing a Lizaad Williams delivery to get hit on the pads. The umpire put up his finger but Shubman Gill went for a DRS review to satisfy himself. The result didn’t change though, with Shubman adjudged out by video umpire.

Twin Ducks not a good sign for Team India

Both openers departing so early might be a worrying sign for India as they look to put up some formidable performances in T20Is before the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Moreover, this duck can spell the start of a tough phase for particularly Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is facing a tough competition against Ruturaj Gaikwad for that opening spot. With only one more IND vs SA T20I match remaining, it will be worth keeping a watch if the Indian team management trusts Yashasvi or goes with Ruturaj in the IND vs SA 3rd T20I.
