Yashasvi Jaiswal has been India’s best batter in Test cricket in 2024. The highest run-getter however, got a real Test cricket welcome in the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. An outswinger by Mitchell Starc and a poor shot selection saw the young southpaw departing the crease for a duck.
Hopes were high on Yashasvi Jaiswal to continue his stunning form in red-ball cricket. But playing Test cricket in SENA countries is a different ball game entirely. And young Jaiswal got a taste of the WACA pitch when a thick outside edge saw his catch being taken in the gully.
Jaiswal falls victim to Mitchell Starc
This was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s first trip to the Down Under. As was evident during India’s 3-day Intra squad friendly, Jaiswal failed to understand the bounce and the swing nature of the pitch. He went on to nick quite a few deliveries during the practice and went on to do so today on Day 1 of the Perth Test.
The young southpaw opted to play for a drive shot but completely played it wrong. He misjudged the line and length and a thick outside edge saw Nathan McSweeney taking a comfortable catch at the gully region.
While it was Jaiswal’s real taste of Test cricket in Australia, the 22-year-old has been in sensational form. In 2024, he became the youngest Indian batter to register 1000 runs in Test cricket in a calendar year.
