India’s series loss to New Zealand at home has complicated the World Test Championship (WTC) Finals scenarios. As things stand, it is now of paramount importance for the India Cricket Team to win the IND vs NZ 3rd Test match to continue their fight to reach the WTC Finals.
To put things simply, India now has just 6 Test matches remaining, with 5 of them being against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Though India continues to top the charts of the WTC Standings, India needs to win 4 of their 6 remaining Test matches to play in the finals.
India’s chances in WTC Finals
Thus it is extremely crucial for Rohit Sharma and Co to win the India vs New Zealand 3rd Test in Mumbai. This means, it would make matters easy for the side, If India go on to win the Mumbai Test, Rohit Sharma and Co will have to win three Test matches in BGT to secure their spot in the finals.
If that fails, then India Cricket Team will surely lose the top spot in the WTC Standings and will have to bank on Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand to falter.
Ever since the start of the World Test Campionship, India have reached the finals on both occasions and have eventually lost out to the Kiwis and Australia. Could thrid time be a charm? But for that the job is difficult. India’s 2-0 loss at Bengaluru and Pune have made the task extremely difficult for the side.
WTC Finals Scenario if India wins BGT
- 1. If India wins 4 Test matches and loses 2 to Australia, then India qualifies as the top team with Australia second.
- 2. If India wins 4 Test matches and draws the other 2, in such a case India tops the charts while Australia drops to the third spot.
- 3. If India wins BGT 2-0, and under favourable conditions, it will be South Africa who takes the second spot with Australia slipping to the third spot.
- 4. If India wins BGT 1-0 and favorable conditions prevail the Proteas will top the charts while India will qualify for the finals by finishing second.
